Artist Statement
I enjoy manipulating colors, patterns of light and shade, and space to capture particular sensations of subjects that intrigue me. Generating a mood is more important to me than reproducing a literal interpretation of a subject. I favor a palette of rich colors to create sensory associations. Sometimes I break up the surface plane in order to emphasize the abstract qualities of the composition.
Subjects:
Flowers attract me because they provide a wonderful interaction of color, light and shadow that I transform into interesting patterns of nature. Traveling and living in Egypt continue to provide a wide variety of subjects, and inspire me to develop themes ranging from Egyptian women to desert landscapes. I am intrigued by glimpses of veiled Egyptian women who lead me consider our parallel but foreign worlds. In addition, there is the Egyptian desert with its myriad of colors and formations that create, depending on the time of day, dramatic shifts in colors and mood.
